For those just starting, brass or nickel-silver darts are often the best choice. They’re more affordable and typically have a thicker barrel, which can be easier for new players to grip and control as they develop their throwing style.

Brass is great for casual play, but tungsten is the standard for serious players. Because tungsten is a very dense metal, it allows for a much thinner barrel at the same weight. Thinner barrels mean more room in the treble-20 for tighter groupings and higher scores.

Steel-tip darts are used on traditional sisal (bristle) boards and are the standard for most leagues. Soft-tip darts feature plastic tips and are used on electronic dartboards that automatically track scores, which are popular in many modern social venues.

We recommend a bristle dartboard made from sisal fibres. These boards are durable and self-healing after you pull the dart out. To protect your walls, we also suggest adding a dartboard surround or cabinet.

Flights and shafts are the most common parts to wear out. You should replace your flights as soon as they become frayed or torn, as this affects the dart’s aerodynamics. Shafts should be replaced if they become bent or if the tines that hold the flight become loose. For steel-tip darts, keep a sharpener handy to ensure your points aren’t dull or burred.

The centre of the bull should be 5’8″ from the floor. For steel-tip darts, the throw line should be 7’9 1/4′. For soft-tip darts, the throw line should be 8’ away.
